The consulting firm Mercer has published a new edition of its renowned expatriates' cost of living in the world's leading cities. As usual, Hong Kong leads the list of the most costly cities, although some of the best positions have changed compared to previous issues. Let's have a look at the ranking of Spain's most expensive cities in the world for expatriates this year.

Ashgabat (Turkmenistan's capital) is second in Tokyo. Third capital city is Japanese: Zurich (Switzerland), Singapore (Singapore), New York (United States), Shanghai (China), Bern (Switzerland), Geneva (Switzerland) and Beijing (China). Therefore, 6 of the top 10 positions are occupied by Asian cities. Seoul (South Korea), Tel Aviv (Israel), Shenzhen (China), London (United Kingdom), then San Francisco and Los Angeles are among the next 10 key quotations (USA).

You have to go almost to 90th place to see the first Spanish city on the list. Madrid is 87th in this 2020 edition (it was 82nd in the previous edition), making it Spain one of the teuers behind other European cities such as London, Paris, Berlin, Oslo or Frankfurt (India). Tunis (Tunisia), Windhoek (Capital Namibia), Taskent (Uzbekistan's capital) and Bishkek are the cheapest cities in this edition (capital of Kyrgyzstan).

To complete the ranking, the consultancy analyzes the prices of dozens of products and services every year from food to rent and entertainment. As the company explains, this annual survey "is meant to help multinational corporations and governments to develop their expatriate workers' compensation strategies." For all comparisons, New York is used as the reference town and currency fluctuations are measured against the US dollar. This year's survey covers 209 towns around the world and measures the comparative cost of over two hundred items, including accommodation, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment.
